Pendant lamps

A pendant light does more than provide light. Above a dining table, it brings the entire seating area together; in a high-ceilinged hallway, it fills the emptiness that a ceiling light often leaves behind. That is why this collection includes both compact models for a focused area and broader lights that truly add volume to a room.

Which pendant light suits your space?

Start with the place where the light will hang. Above a round table, a light with soft lines or a central shade almost always works better than an elongated fixture, while a long dining table calls for more spread. A kitchen island without a good distribution of light can quickly create a dark strip on the worktop, as if you were standing just beside your chopping board instead of above it.

The size does not have to be complicated. A pendant light may make a statement, but it should remain in proportion to the space below it. Above a two-metre dining table, first consider how the light falls along the length, and only then look at the diameter on paper. For extra guidance, also read how to choose the right pendant light above a dining table and how high to hang a pendant light above a table.

Material and appearance

The material determines how a pendant light looks during the day and how it spreads light in the evening. Glass keeps the overall look open and airy, especially above a table where you want to keep sightlines clear. Dark metal stands out more strongly against a light ceiling and has a stronger presence, even when the light is switched off. A matte shade often produces calmer light. Clear glass creates more sparkle, for example on a glossy plate placed directly beneath the light.

Brown and black tones work particularly well in an interior with an oak table and sand-coloured upholstery. That contrast feels less harsh than completely black against white. If you already have a sleek kitchen with flat-fronted cabinets and a rectangular table, a light with rounded shapes almost always wins. It takes the tension out of all those straight lines.

Combining it with other lighting

A pendant light does not have to solve everything in your room. In a living room or dining room, a single light source rarely feels comfortable throughout the evening. Above the table, you want focused light, but around the sofa, the space calls for a softer glow that does not shine into your eyes. That is why pendant lights often work better in combination with table lamps or one of the floor lamps in the range.

This combination is also smart in rooms with lower ceilings. There, a more subtle pendant light often works better than a large model. A low-ceilinged dining room with a wide table, for example, benefits from a modest pendant light above the tabletop and additional ambient light from ceiling lights or other accents from all lighting. This prevents all the light from coming from one harsh source, like a stage spotlight above the table while the rest of the room fades into darkness.

Practical choices that make a big difference later

Pay close attention to the light source and socket. They determine not only how much light you get, but also what the lamp looks like when it is switched on. A visible filament bulb creates a warmer, more decorative look, while a more enclosed light source often appears calmer. For the technical differences between sockets, see light sources and the blog about common lamp sockets.

Also check the lamp's total height and how adjustable the cord is. It may seem like a detail, but it makes the difference between a light that hangs neatly above the tabletop and a model that keeps floating too high. Above an open dining table, you want to keep air around it. A multi-light pendant looks its best when its form remains clearly visible, like a branch that needs room to show its shape.

Which pendant light gives the most light?

The light output mainly depends on the combination of shade and light source. An open fixture with multiple light points often illuminates a table better than a single large shade that blocks a lot of light.

Is a pendant light suitable as the main lighting?

Often for a dining area, yes; for an entire living room, usually not. Larger spaces need additional lighting to prevent dark corners and harsh contrasts.

Which pendant light colour is easiest to combine?

Dark metal is the safest choice. Above an oak table with a beige chair, such a light remains clearly present without contrasting harshly with the rest of the room.

What works better above a narrow table, one light or several?

For a narrow, longer table, an elongated model or a composition with multiple light points usually creates a calmer look than one large round shade in the centre. The light then follows the shape of the tabletop more effectively.

A good pendant light brings scale, atmosphere and direction to a room. So do not choose based on style alone, but mainly on the shape, light distribution and the place where it has to do its job every day.
