All cabinets

You rarely buy a cabinet on a whim. It needs to hide your belongings and make the proportions of the room work. Even after a few years, it should still feel right in the space, not like that one piece of furniture that once seemed convenient. That is why the entire category is brought together here: from low units that create calm along a wall to compact models for places where every centimetre counts.

Which type of cabinet suits your space?

Start with the function, not the finish. In the living room, a low sideboard often works better than a tall cabinet because the wall looks calmer and the top remains useful for a lamp or a stack of books. In the bedroom, reach and convenience matter more, so you will soon find yourself looking at bedside tables that do not take up too much floor space beside the bed.

For a narrow passageway or an empty wall, height is often smarter than width. A wall cabinet makes use of the wall without making the room feel cramped, especially in places where a deep storage unit would immediately feel bulky. The hallway is a story of its own: you do not want to be constantly looking at a pile of shoes by the front door. So focus on hallway furniture that keeps the first metre of your home feeling calm.

Materials and appearance

With cabinets, you quickly see what a material does to the atmosphere in your home. A solid wood cabinet, for example in mango wood, immediately gives a room more weight. You can see the grain running through it, just as you can see the growth rings in a sawn tree trunk, and that is precisely what makes such a piece feel more alive than a flat, uniform panel. Black wood creates a strong accent against a light wall. A sand-coloured shade recedes more into the background and allows other furniture to join in more easily.

Metal gives the look a sharper edge. Dark steel has something of an old workbench: straight lines and no frills. A cabinet that combines wood and metal therefore works particularly well in a living room that already has plenty of softness in a generous upholstered sofa. Read more about this combination in the blog about mixing wood, glass and metal in one room.

Dimensions that work in practice

A cabinet may make a statement, but it should not take over the walking route from the rest of your furniture. A useful guideline: leave enough clearance for drawers and doors so that you do not have to squeeze past a chair every time. Especially in compact living rooms, this is where things go wrong—not with the style.

Depth deserves extra attention. A shallow piece of furniture along a wall often feels more comfortable than a wide model that pushes into the room. Just place a substantial cabinet next to the dining table and you will immediately notice how quickly a passageway starts to feel cramped. For the proportions between a sofa and a storage unit along the same wall, the blog about getting the proportions of a sofa, coffee table and console table right is a useful addition.

Combining cabinets without creating visual clutter

The best arrangement usually does not come from separate finds, but from repetition. If black metal already appears in a lamp or table base, a cabinet in the same direction will fit in almost naturally. If the foundation is warm wood, carry it through in one larger piece of furniture instead of lots of small accents. That looks calmer and more convincing.

Open and closed compartments each have their own role. A closed door is the best place for things that would otherwise keep lying around. Think of that drawer with chargers and loose mail that keeps ending up on the table. An open compartment works better for a few books you like to pick up or a bowl that deserves to be seen. Too much open storage requires maintenance—you notice that after just one week.

Which cabinet should you choose for a small space?
Choose a model that makes use of the wall without looking heavy. In practice, a taller, slim cabinet often works better than a wide storage unit that immediately takes up half your walking space.

What is more convenient, drawers or doors?
Drawers are especially useful for small items that would otherwise disappear into a deep cabinet. Think of a drawer in the hallway where keys and mail immediately have a fixed place. Doors work better for larger items and give the cabinet front a calmer appearance.

Does dark wood work in a light interior?
Yes, dark wood actually comes into its own there. It provides balance against white walls and light floors, as long as you keep it to a few clear accents. The blog about dark accents in a light interior can help with this.

Is an open cabinet practical for everyday use?
That depends mainly on what you put in it. A shelf with books usually looks calm enough on its own. Loose cables and papers create a messy appearance much more quickly, even in a tidy cabinet.

Those who search with a clear goal will find the right type of cabinet more quickly through the subcollections. Still unsure which direction to take? This overview page will help you first determine which size and layout really suit your space.
